Building Schools for the Future
About
The DCSF’s Building School for the Future (BSF) Programme is a unique opportunity for local authorities to transform education for all stakeholders in their community. ICT will play a key element in enabling the transformational journey – for learners, teachers and other community stakeholders.
Challenge
ICT is transforming the way in which learners are communicating with each other and society in general. New technologies such as Facebook, Flickr, Second Life etc have enabled learners to become active rather then passive users of web based technologies. New feature rich mobile technologies have transformed when, where and how young people communicate and share information.
BSF offers Local Authorities the opportunity to evaluate the current and future trends in technologies and to assess how they can be best integrated into traditional or new learning models, the management of schools and the wider delivery of education in their community,
BSF envisages that ICT will be delivered in schools as part of an area-wide ICT Managed Service. Many schools are uncertain about the benefits of an ICT Managed Service. Key questions include:
- What does ICT and transformation mean to my school?
- How can an ICT Managed Service support innovation and research?
- Will the ICT Managed Service undermine my current investment in ICT?
- What will happen to my current ICT support staff?
- How can I be sure that the ICT Managed Service will add value to my school?
Local Authorities must work closely with schools throughout the BSF process to ensure that the school understand the benefits of the service and have ownership and buy-in to the final solution.
The BSF programme also offers Local Authorities the opportunity to further develop their wider LA ICT Strategy – to ensure the ICT strategy for BSF schools is closely integrated with other schools, children service and wider LA partners. The BSF solution may provide the foundations for a service that can be scaled and tailored for all educational institutions in the Authority. The ICT solution must support and enable an environment where a dynamic curriculum can develop, independent learning can flourish, progress can be tracked and effective support can be made available.
